With a differential compound connection the shunt field coil

With a differential compound connection, the shunt field coil is making a pole piece an N pole while the series field coil is trying to make the same pole piece:

a. An N pole.

b. An S pole.

c. Not any pole.

Solution

In the differential compound motor the shunt field is connected so that its magnetic field opposes the magnetic fields in the armature and series field. When the shunt field\'s polarity is reversed like this, its field will oppose the other fields so inorder to oppose north pole series field coil tries to make same pole i.e north pole.
