Epicyclic gears

A new drive system for a ball mill is being considered- The schematic representation of the gearbox is shown in Figure 3. (a) The Intermediate Gear is made from solid steel with an equivalent diameter of 1300 mm and width of 800 mm. Assume a density of 7850 kg/m^3. Determine the effective mass moment of inertia of this gear about the drive motor shaft, given that the input pinion has 26 teeth and the intermediate gear has 105 teeth. (b) An overall gear reduction ratio close to 10.93 is required between the drive motor and the output carrier arm. If the planetary system has a fixed annulus gear with 181 teeth, determine the possible input sun gear teeth numbers. (c) A drive motor of full load power of 400 kW is being selected to run at 960 rpm. Calculate the resulting torque on the output shaft.

Solution

The loaded four wheel trailer shown in Figure P8.10 has a total mass of 5t and is pulled along a level road. Average resistance to motion (friction and windage) is 2 per cent of the total weight and acts at the same horizontal level as the applied force P. Determine the normal reaction at each of the front and rear wheels when the trailer moves:

a) at constant velocity

b) with forward acceleration 1.5m/s².

(Average resistance to motion is 2% of total weight is not required.)
