gSickle cell anemia is one of the common blood disorders. Globally around 45 million people have this trait, but only around 3.5million suffer from the disease. This disease is due to the abnormal hemoglobin formation due to a set of defective gene inheritance. Due to the point mutation in the gene coding for hemoglobin in the short rm of chromosome 11 this disorder happens. A person who receives the defective gene from both father and mother develops the disease; a person who receives one defective and one healthy allele remains healthy, but can pass on the disease and is known as a carrier. This mode of inheritance is called Autosomal Recessive inheritance.

Normal RBC are highly elastic and can change their shape to pass through fine cappillaries. Whereas in sickle cell disease, the rbc assume a sickle shape and tend to accumulate in large numbers at the cappillaries and clog the blood vessels.
