The CGS system of units was once commonly used in science. What is the unit of force in the CGS system? Find the conversion factor between this unit and a Newton. Find the conversion factor between this unit and a lb_r.

Solution

1) 1 dyne , is the unit of force in CGS system .

2) 1 dyne = 1gm.cm/sec^2

                  = 10^-3 kg . 10^-2 m / sec ^2

                  = 10^-5 . kg.m / sec^2

                1 dyne = 10^-5 Newton .

2) lbf is the force due to gravity on 1 pound of mass

        lbf = 1 lbm x 9.8066 m /sec^2

               = 0.4535 kg x 9.8066 m /sec^2

              = 4.4482216 N

we had already solved for conversion factor for 1 N = 10^5 dyne

            lbf = 4.44822 * 10^5 dyne

                  = 444822.16 dyne

or 1 dyne = (1/444822 ) lbf
