Explain the relationship between antibiotics and selective toxicity. a. Discuss the relative benefits of broad-spectrum and narrow-spectrum antibiotics.
Solution
It is important to determine the spectrum of antibiotic against the microorganisms (means, screening out the susceptible organisms) because the unnecessary usage of broad spectrum antibiotics causes more side effects as they kill several bacteria that may also include the healthy bacteria in our body. Another reason is, if the selected antibiotic is not effective against that organism (as in case of narrow spectrum antibiotic), the infection does not cure and becomes worse. Using selective antibiotics for selective bacteria will give the desired results.
Broad spectrum antibiotics kill a wide range of bacterial species including the healthy bacteria in our body, children are more likely to develop breathing problems with the broad spectrum antibiotics. Another disadvantage is, the emergence of drug resistance is more likely with the usage of broad spectrum antibiotics. Selective narrow spectrum antibiotics are safe for children and elderly. Broad spectrum antibiotics are useful in the treatment of diseases with unidentified organisms.
