With reference to two distinct examples explain The Principl

With reference to two distinct examples, explain The Principle of Referential Locality. Explain how an operating system\'s use of virtual memory can enable the operating system to appear to support the use of more memory than is physically installed in a computer.

Solution

4 a) The principle of locality, is a term for the phenomenon in which the same values, or related storage locations, are frequently accessed, depending on the memory access pattern. There are two basic types of reference locality temporal and spartial

Example:- If you are opening or using a file too frequently, the computer will store its temporary file at a address which can be reffered easily.

4 b) Virtual Memory refers to the use of main memory when a process has a size which is larger than the main memory, so in the process of virtual memory, some part of the memory which has to be used currently is loaded in the main memory and then is flushed when its use is over.

For example you have a Main memory of 1 GB and you need to run a process lets say a game of 2GB, so the part of 2GB which is currently required is loaded in the 1GB of main memory and then when it is no more used the other part of the 2GB is loaded.
