Brady is 50 years old and was diagnosed with hypertension for about three years. Brady has not been taking his medications for the past six months because he has been feeling good. He has recently begun a new job and is an active golfer and jogger. Lately; however, he has had symptoms of dizziness, blurred vision, and epistaxis. He goes to his primary care physician who reveals blood pressure of 187/115, sclerosis of the retinas of his eyes and small arteriolar ruptures. The physician prescribes rest, blood pressure medications and additional testing for kidney function and nutrition.

1)What is the pathophysiology of hypertension?

2)What problems can be associated with such high diastolic pressures?

3)Identify two medications helpful for treating hypertension and what are their actions?

Solution

Thanks for the question.
Hypertension is a lifestyle disease, which can be caused my multiple factors which include lifestyle and environmental. Lifestyle factors include a diet rich in fats and oils, excessive weight, lack of exercise, overeating, hereditatry influences etc. Environmental factors include stress, lack of sleep, environmentally induced tensions such as in workplace, home, relationships etc. All this factors lead to a constriction of blood vessels leading to increased blood pressure.
The problems associated with such high blood pressure are that it can lead to a cerebro vascular accident (stroke), a heart attack, cardiac arrest, bleeding inside the body, headache etc
The medications that can be used to treat this hypertension are ACE inhibitor like enalapril and a beta blocker such as atenolol.
Thanks
