A box full of oranges weighs 9 pounds. After the family ate 2/3 of the oranges, the remaining oranges and the box weighed 4 pounds. The weight of the box when empty is how many pounds?
Solution
Weight of box with full oranges = 9 pounds -- (I)
Oranges eaten by the family = 2/3
Hence remaining oranges = 1/3
Weight of remaining 1/3 oranges with box = 4 pounds --(II)
I-II gives
2/3 oranges weight = 5pounds
Or full oranges along weigh = 7.5 pounds
As full oranges with box = 9 pounds
WEight of box empty = 9-7.5 = 1.5 pounds
