2- What is a cofferdam?
3- What is a tremie?
4-Describe soil settlement because of lowering groundwater?
5-What is the variable \"k\" and its definition?
6- How is \"k\" obtained in the lap
Solution
Prob.1
A slurry wall formation is the process of filling the excavated trench with bentonite and water slurry, which helps in stabilizing the walls of the soil. This technique is needed at places where the water table is high or the soil is weak and unstable. Thick bentonite slurry stabilizes the inwards collapsing loads due to self weight of the soil and water, and thus also stop the water flow to certain degree. Once the excavation is done, the reinforcement cage is put in, and the concrete is poured from the bottom to form the RCC wall. Such walls form the barrier to the groundwater or contaminated waters.
Prob.2
A cofferdam is a temporary dam constructed with the rocks, stone, earth and wood or sometimes steel plates to divert the water flow of a river or stream, so that the construction can be done in the area of interest. Such dams are also constructed with still water bodies such as oceans or lakes, and here they make a closed shape. The dewatering pumps may be needed to keep the area dry.
