Jasmine tea sells for $7 per pound and Chamomile tea sells for $5.50 per pound. How many pounds of each tea are needed to create 10 pounds of a mixture that sells for $6.40 per pound?
Solution
let x be the number of pounds of jasmine
==> 10 -x be the number of pounds of chamomile
cost of tea of jasmine = 7x
cost of tea of chamomile = (10 -x)(5.50)
cost of 10 pounds of mixture = 10(6.40) = 64
==> 7x + (10 -x)(5.50) = 64
==> 7x + 55 - 5.5x = 64
==> 1.5x = 64 -55
==> 1.5x = 9
==> x = 9/1.5
==> x = 6
Hence number of pounds of jasmine tea = 6
number of pounds of chamomile tea = 10 -6 = 4
