Complete the following chart for the excerpt from Darwin’s paper. Provide examples of evolution by natural selection that Darwin used in his writing. Describe the species, the variations among individuals, the selective pressure, and how species change over time.

Solution

Darwin proposed that during the process of evolution, new species are formed with traits that better help to adapt to their environments. With time, the survival of these transitional species increased and the parental species were completely extinct. And all the geographical data what we are finding is not true because several of the species are linked by intermediate species and the geographical data does not always preserve such intermediate or parental species.

Darwin’s finches are the symbols of evolution, they are observed by Darwin during his voyage during the years 1831-1836. After this voyage, he changed his thinking about the new species origin. He observed that the shape of bird beaks changes from island to island. Cactus finches are more longer and more pointed than their relatives ground finches. Warbler finches are thinner and pointed than both. These are the adaptations that make these birds more fit to survive on available food. By molecular research of finches eggs, researchers observed that some genes are involved in shaping the beaks of Darwin finches. Calmodulin activates certain enzymes that trigger signals which result in turning on or turning off of certain genes.
