What is the probability of drawing a 5 or a spade from a sta

What is the probability of drawing a 5 or a spade from a standard deck of cards?

Solution

P(A) = No of favourable outcomes/Total No. of outcomes

A card deck has 52 cards of which there are four 5\'s and 13 spades (there is a common 5 of spades)

The required Probability is P(drawing a 5) + P(drawing a spades) - P(drawing a 5 of spades)(this is common to both and hence we subtract)

P(drawing a 5) = 4/52

P(Drawing a spade) = 13/52

P(Drawing 5 of spades) = 1/52

Therefore the required probability = 4/52 + 13/52 - 1/52 = 16/52 = 4/13 or 0.3077
