Which object has the most potential energy when held a dista

Which object has the most potential energy when held a distance H above the surface of the ground?

Object A: mass =1 kilogram: H=3 meters

Object B: mass= 1 slug; H=3 feet

Object C: mass = 1 gram; H= 1 centimeter

Then prove your answer by specifying each energy in Joules.

The potential energy of Object A is _________ J.

The potential energy of Object B is _________ J.

The potential energy of Object C is _________ J.

Solution

Potential Energy (PE) = mgh

Where, m = mass (in kg)

g = gravitational acceleration ( 9.8 m/sec2)

h = height above the earth\'s surface (in meter)

PE = Potential Energy (in Joules)

For Object A:

m = 1kg

h = 3 meter

So, PE = 1*9.8*3 = 29.4 Joules

For Object B:

m = 1 slug = 14.594 kg

h = 3 feet = 0.914 meter

So, PE = 14.594*9.8*0.914 = 130.7213 Joules

For Object C:

m = 1 gram = 0.001 kg

h = 1 centimetre = 0.01 meter

So, PE = 0.0011*9.8*0.01 = 0.000098 Joules

Hence, the object B has the most potential energy among all 3 objects.

Which object has the most potential energy when held a distance H above the surface of the ground? Object A: mass =1 kilogram: H=3 meters Object B: mass= 1 slug
