(Need help with the steps) The answers:
Check the design shown in Figure 1. Assume A36 steel and the SMAW welding process. Check for it OK? failure of the member as well as the weld. Is the design satisfactory? If not, what should be done to make 1/4 t-1/2\" Po= 62 kips | | 6\" Figure 1Solution
Let us determine the strength of weld
total weld length = 5+5+6=16 in
weld size provided = 1/4
D=4
Weld strength = 1.392*4*16=89.1 kips
Demand/capacity = 62/89.1=0.70
Block shear check of 3/8\" plate:
Area of plate in shear =Av= (5+5)*3/8=3.75 in2
Area of plate in tension =At= 6*3/8=2.25 in2
Fy=36 ksi
Fu=58 ksi
0.6*Fu*Av + Fu*At = 0.6*58*3.75 + 58*2.25=261 kips
0.6*Fy*Av+Fu*At=0.6*36*3.75 + 58*2.25=211.5 kips
Block shear strength = 0.75*min(261,211.5)=158.625 kips
D/C = 62/158.625=0.4
gross section yielding tension capacity of 3/8 thick plate = 6*3/8 * 36*0.9 = 72.9 kips
D/C=62/72.9=0.85
