Consider a pulse energy of EL delivered by a laser during surgery. The energy is absorbed within a tissue volume of 1000 cubic micrometers , which is 80% water. Assume the heat capacity of the tissue (with and without water) is 4.35 kJ/kg K. Describe what happens to the tissue when the pulse energy, EL, is applied at the different values of 0.1 microJ, 0.5 microJ, and 3.0 microJ.
Solution
Pulse energy result in change is temperature which can be quantified by first converting volume into grams since 80 then% of its is water then 1000 cubic micrometers will be 1000 grams and temperature can be calculated using formula
T=weight(grams)/energy in Joules*heat capacity (here all the unit should be converted into same scale)
T for 0.1 microJ= 228 0C which will lead to vaporization and same for other as they will result in higher temperature.
