When small thick sausages are overcooked by means of boiling
When small thick sausages are overcooked by means of boiling, sometimes they rupture. You probably noticed that rupture crack propagates in the longitudinal direction (see figure below). Explain why the rupture crack usually propagates in the longitudinal direction. Make necessary assumptions and justify your answer.
Solution
Suasages are liike the thin Pressure vessel . As it was over cooked means cooking beyond the time and temprature.
So the temprature wii be increasing and it will make the material inside the sausage to exert more pressure on the walls or In the case of a homogenous stress field, the crack will propagate in the direction perpendicular to the least principal stress.
Boiling the sausage will make the material inside it to expand will exert an force on the walls which in terms as pressure which is more than outside pressure so crack will appear the direction perpendicular to the least principal stress.
