You mix two pure components together (A and B) at the same temperature and pressure, and the mixing process is exothermic.
A. If you desire to do the mixing in an adiabatic manner, will the temperature of the system increase, decerase or stay the same?
B. How would your answer change if you treated the system as an ideal solution?
Please explain answers!
Solution
Clearly since it is a Exothermic reaction there is liberation of heat energy , which of course comes from the chemical energy/ Internal energy of components takig part in the reaction.
Thats why...........
IN CASE (A.) The temperature of system will increase (on the expense of internal energy loss)
IN CASE (B.) For Ideal solution i) Enthalpy of mixing zero
ii) Change in volume is nearly zero
But thats not the case here
Thats why.......
There will be no molecular interactions concerned with chemical reaction
so,The Temperature of system will remain unchanged in CASE (B)
