Which of the following statements about a chemical synapse is true?
Calcium ions relay the signal generated by an action potential in one neuron across the gap to a second neuron.
It allows signal transmission from one neuron to another through a wave of electrochemical change.
Signal transmission occurs by diffusion of a compound called a neurotransmitter through the intercellular space between neurons.
Its presynaptic component undergoes chemical breakdown in response to a signal, and the breakdown product carries the signal to the postsynaptic component.
2. What must be present at the postsynaptic site within a chemical synapse for the signal to be transmitted?
Membrane receptors that bind neurotransmitter molecules
Postsynaptic vesicles containing neurotransmitter molecules
Postsynaptic vesicles containing sodium ions
Membrane receptors that bind calcium ions

Solution

During chemical synapse, when the action potential reaches the end of presynaptic neuron, calcium ions enter the presynaptic neuron. Higher calcium concentration inside neuron allows to release neurotransmitters that reach postsynaptic neuron and binds to the receptors on postsynaptic neuron. The binding of neurotransmitters to receptors generates action potential in postsynaptic neuron.
