Describe the usefulness of morphological and metabolic/biochemical characters (or traits) for the purpose of identifying bacteria to the genus and/or species level. Why did we use these traits? What are the limitations?
Solution
When a bacteria is being given first thing is to know about that bacteria is their size, categories, their nutrients media etc..
So biochemical characterisation helps us to know whether the bacteria are gram-positive or gram - negative which helps us to understand about their cell wall structure. It also helps us in staining methods. Biochemical characterisation helps in finding which media they require for growth, the substance they ferment, which enzymes they produce, which antibiotics they are resistant..!!
On the other hand morphological characters also helps us in other way about knowing the bacteria. It helps us to know about the size, shape of the bacteria which could be seen by microscope. It also helps in knowing the cell arrangements of the bacteria. These can be helpful to know the category or class to which it comes..
