Soil Mechanics why would the reading be different and incorr

Soil Mechanics:

why would the reading be different (and incorrect) if the hydrometer was left in the jar throughout the test? what happens if it was left in rather than continually removed?

Solution

Hydrometer test based on stoke\'s law as per Stoke setting of particle should not be obstructed in suspension ,

If hydrometer was left in jar throughout the test then setting of particle will be obstructed , and finer particle may not settle independently, and also finer particle may stick to surface of hydrometer, because of this we got different and incorrect reading,.
