Public Education

The national system of formal education in the united Statess developed in the 19th century. It differed from education system of other Western societies in three fundamental respects. First Americans were more inclined to regard education as a solution to various social problems. Second, they had this confidence in the power of education, Americans provided more years of schooling for a larger percentage of the population than other countries. Third, educational institutions were primarily governed by local authorities rather than by federal ones. The most notable characteristic of the American education system is the large number of people it serves. In 1995, 87 % of Americans between age 25 and 29 had graduated from high school. Among those who had completed highschool, 62% had completed at leasst some college, and 28% had earned at least a bachelor\'s degree. Expanding access to college education is an important priority for the U.S. government. In his 1997 States of the Union address U.S. president Bill Clinton called for the ceation of new public policy to enable virtually every high school graduate to receive some form of college education.After the American Revolution (1775-1783), the founder of the United States argued that education was essential for the prosperity and survival of the new nation.Thomas jefferson, author of the Declaration of independence, proposed that Americans give a high priority to a \"crusade against ignorance\". Jefferson was the first American leader to suggest creating a system of free school for all persons that would be public supported through taxes. In 1779 he proposed an education plan that would have supported free schooling for all childern in the state of Virginia for three years. The best students from this group would continue in school at public expense through adolescence.The most advanced of these students would go on to publicly funded colleges. Jefferson\'s proposal was never enacted and his idea of selecting the best and brightest students for special advantage failed to gain widespread support. However, Jefferson\'s plans for universal education and for publicly funded schools formed the basis of education system developed in the 19th century.Until the 1840s American education was not a system at all, but a disjointed collection of local, regional, and usually private institutions. The extent of schooling and the type of education available depended on the resources and values of the particular town or city , on the activities of religious group seeking to further their ends through schools and colleges, and on many other private groups- such as philanthropic association and trade organizations - that created different types of schools for different reasons. Most institution only provided educational opportunities for boys from wealth families. Public governing bodies were rarely involved in the financing or control of schools.

The efficiency of McDonaldization

Although, especially in the United SStates, the ubiquitous hamburger chain has been around long enough for academics and other commentators repeatedly to have drawn attention to its social effecte and analogies in other fields, it is the socologist George Ritzer who coined the phrase in his book \"The Mcdonaldization of Society\"(Ritzer, 1996). In his book, which he describes as a work in social criticism, Ritzer analyses the particular ways in which the success of the American hamburger chain has impacted upon not only economic patterns, but in particular on a multitude of facets of social life in general. Basing his analysis on Max weber\'s theory of rationalisation, he draws on ex- tensive empirical and anecdotal data to trace these influences. McDonald\'s revolutionising influence on the fast- food industry not only in America, but increasingly across the globe, has led to the establishment of dozens of clones in just about every branch of the retail industry and has led to other social institutions adapting McDonald\'s principles to their operations. The process by which these principles are coming to dominate more and more sectors of society, is perceived by Ritzer to extend to education, work, health care, travel, leisure, dieting and many more fields. This institution as diverse as the sex industry, where more efficient porn shops are the order of the day, and the Roman Catholic Chruch, where, since 1985, adherents can receive indulgences through the pope\'s annual Christmas benediction on radio and TV (Ritzer, 1996,) The connection of the name of Ray Kroc\'s empire to this process is not to suggest that it is a totally new and revolutionising development devoid of precedents. Ritzer finds its roots in the whole phenomenon of bureaucratisation, as well as in the idea of scientific management and naturally in twentieth century industry\'s assembly line. Given these precursors, it comes as no surprise that always more products and sectors come under the ambit of these developments and that its geographical reach has become ever wider- presently also to include tremendously successful outlets in Moscow and Peking. Then again it must be pointed out that this development of rationalisation is not an all or nothing process. Different facets of the economy have reacted differently to it and it is safe to say that there have even been reactions to it. In the last regard the move towards smaller and more personalizaation and caring businesses of all kinds can be mentioned
