Use the SPSS output below to answer the following questions. The dependent variable was OPTIMIST (“I am an optimist”). The predictors were RELIGIOUS (“I am a religious/spiritual person”) and WORSESOC (“Our society has been progressively getting worse over the years”). All three of these variables ranged from 1-strongly disagree to 5-strongly agree.

If you knew someone scored a 4 on WORSESOC and a 2 on RELIGIOUS, what would you predict their score would be on OPTIMIST?

Solution

The dependent variable Y = OPTIMIST

Predictors are RELIGIOUS and WORSESOC.

From this output the regression equation will be,

Y = 3.000 - 0.179 * WORSESOC + 0.377 * RELIGIOUS.

We are given that  WORSESOC = 4 and RELIGIOUS = 2 then,

Y = 3.000 - 0.179 * 4 + 0.377 * 2

Y = 3.038
