Assume that the rectangular work piece shown in the accompanying figure is being pushed to the right by a lateral force F while being compressed between flat dies. Find the forging force required per inch of depth. Use the values given below. Take material as 5052-0 Aluminum.

Solution

The Ultimate tensile strength of 5052 - O grade Aluminum is 28 ksi.or 28000 psi

Since the friction between the surfaces of the die and the Aluminum material involves in forging in the forging process, the applied force is considered to be equal to the friction force,

Fapplied = Ffriction.

The friction force can be found using the relation,

F = mu x N where N is the normal force.

The compression of the die is taken as the normal force which is 28000 psi.

Find the F from the above eqn,

F = mu x 28000 = 0.3 x (28000 x 48) / 12 = 33600 lbf per unit depth
