A multimeter set to read 1000 V full-scale has a 100 M ohm resistor in series with its meter coil The resistance of the coil is 100 ohm 5. What current flows in the coil at full-scale deflection? When switched to read current, the multimeter connects the coil in parallel with a shunt resistor of R = 0.0010 ohm What current through the shunt will cause full-scale deflection?

Solution

maximum voltage V= 1000 volt

Resistance of the coil R = 100 ohm

Resistance of the resisitor R \' = 100 x10 6 ohm

R and R \' are in series.So, resultant resistance R \" = R + R \'

                R \" = (100)+(100x10 6)

Current flows in coil at full scale deflection i = V / R \"

                                                               = 9.9999 x10 -6 A

(b).

maximum voltage V= 1000 volt

Shunt Resistance R = 0.001 ohm

Resistance of the resisitor R \' = 100 x10 6 ohm

R and R \' are in paralle.Let resultant resistance be R \"

Then (1/R\") = (1/R ) +(1/R \')

                 = (1/0.001)+(1/100x10 6)

                 = 1000 +(1 x10 -8 )

                = 1000

           R \" = 1x10 -3 ohm

Current through the circuit i = V / R \"

                                        = 1000 /(10 -3 )

                                        =10 6 A

Current through shunt i \' = i [ R \' /(R+R\')]

                                    = 10 6 [1]

                                    = 10 6 A
