Derive the demand curve good X for the utility function U X

Derive the demand curve good X for the utility function U = X^2Y^3. Show your work.

Solution

U = X2 Y3

The budget constraint is: I = PxX + PyY

Where, Px = Price of good X

           Py = Price of good Y

         I = Income

Then, MUx = 2XY3

            MUy = 3X2Y2

For utility maximization

MUx/Px = MUy/Py

2XY3 /Px = 3X2Y2 /Py

Solving for Y

2XY3 / 3X2Y2 = Px / Py

2Y/3X = Px / Py

2Y = 3XPx / Py

Y = 3XPx / 2Py = 1.5X(Px/Py)

Substituting the value of Y into budget constraint

I = PxX + PyY

= PxX + Py[1.5X(Px/Py)]

= PxX +1.5XPx

= 2.5XPx

Then, X = I / 2.5Px   (This is the demand curve for good X)
