A coach has noticed that several of his athletes are not performing at their anticipated standard in the weight room for the past few weeks. He is unsure whether this is from lack of effort on the part of the athletes or if something else is going on. The athletes are about two weeks into on-field training and are currently at their heaviest for both volume and intensity in the weight room. What major issue could be developing, and what are some signs that the strength coach could be on the lookout for?

Solution

It can be understood from the data that although the athletes are performing on-field training, they still are heavy for volume and intensity in the weight room. This suggests that the athletes are not physically fit enough to perform weight exercises probably due to their high body weight. This can increase the total fat mass in the body and accumulation of lipids in the body. This further reduces the gaseous transport across the muscles cells and decreases aerobic respiration in athletes. This makes onset of anaerobic respiration and accumulation of lactic acid in muscles of the athletes. This lactic acid/lactate accumulation contributes to early fatigue and decrease in function of the skeletal muscles and the athletes are unable to perform optimum exercise.

Thus, some of the signs that the strength coach could look out for are:

Thus, impaired oxidative respiration might have lead to decline in physical performance of the athletes which can be looked out for.
