Your friend is in a canoe 1, that is traveling 4 mi/hr and leaves at 11am. You\'re in canoe 2. It leaves an hour after your friends canoe and is traveling at 6mi/hr. What time will your canoes meet? I know they meet at 2pm, by drawing a graph. I need to know how to solve this problem using an algebraic expression.

Solution

In 1 hour, he\'s 4 miles ahead.
You approach him at 2 mph (6 - 4)
4 miles/2 mph = 2 hours
1200 + 200 = 1400 or 2 PM
