Explain how NDM-1 and KPC are similar to one anotherand how are they (together) different from MRSA and Stenotrophomonas?
Solution
NDM-1 and KPC are classified as superbugs, as they are resistant to the majority of the antibiotics including carbapenems. while NDM-1 is a gene, the KPC stands for Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase. Both of them can make other bacteria resistant to antibiotics, they do so by the means of horizontal gene transfer. they both are gram negative bacterias. NDM-1 mostly affects gram negative bacterias and KPC is a gram negative bacteria.
However, they both are different from another superbug (MRSA) and stenotrophomonas. because MRSA and stenotrophomonas cannot transfer their genes , they have evolved by the horizontal gene transfer from other superbugs.
