The following temperature measurements were taken with an infrared thermometer that produced biased measurements due to the instrument being out of calibration. Calculate the bias in the measurements.

Solution

The bias of an instrument is the output without input.

If we observe the above measured and actual values of temperature , the difference between actual and measured is same for all measured events. So the bias temperature value=temp difference=20-21.5=35-36.5

=-1.5 degrees.

i.e the istrument has -ve bias. For correction we should add 1.5 for every measured value.
