I am having troube understanding this concept in class. Can you please expalin how you get the answer! Thank you!

There is a correlation of .4 between annual wage and numbers of years of teaching experience. Based on this it can be concluded that:

A. A teacher with 40 years’ experience earns $40,000.
B. Teachers will start on a salary of $40,000.
C. More years of teaching experience are associated with higher annual wage.

Solution

Correlation is a number that describes the degree of a linear relationship between two two sets of variables that either move together, or inversely, or are not related at all.

If one set of data increases at the same time as another, the relationship is said to be positive or direct. If one set of data increases as the other decreases, the relationship is negative, or inverse.

In our case the correlation is 0.4, that means positive, then if one set of data (for example years of teaching experience) increases, the other set of data (annual wage) incresases too.

Based on this, it can be concluded that more years of teaching experience are associated with higher anual wage, then the answer is option C
