Calculate the stress developed in a steel bar that is 50 mm by 25mm when a 70kN axial tensile load is applied. Give your answer in two significant figures with MPa units

Solution

Stress = Force/Area

Rectangular steel bar = 50mm x 25mm = (50/1000) x (25/1000) mt^2 = 1250 x10^-6 mt^2

Stress = 70 x 10^3/ 1250 x 10^-6

= 0.056x 10^3+6

= 56 Mpa
