Port :

In the stream of internet protocol suite, a port is an endpoint of communication in an operating system. In the software contraint it is a logical construct that identifies a specific process or a type of network service. A port is always associated with an IP address for the easier identification of the host and the protocol type of the communication, and thus completes the destination or origination address of a communication session. A port is identified for each address and protocol by a 16-bit number, commonly known as the port number.

These were unnecessary on a time of direct point-to-point links where the computers at each other end could only run one program at a time. Ports became necessary after computers became capable of executing more than one program at a time and were connected to modern packet-switched networks.

These are just assigned the numbers but that are not seen physically as these are used to connect to the program from an end point to the other end point.

In IP networking, these virtual ports are numbered 0 through 65535.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) : it is a TCP protocol with port numbers 20/21.

Secure Shell (SSH) : it is also a TCP protocol with port numbers 22.

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) : This protocol runs in the port 80.

Hope this is helpful.
