A ball is thrown into the air by a baby alien on a planet in the system of Alpha Centauri with a velocity of 34 ft/s. Its height in feet after t seconds is given by y=34t-16t^2.

Estimate the instanteneous velocity when t=1. ______?

Solution

first find velocity function;
dy/dt = 34-32t;;

so now average velocity = [(34-32t)dt]/[dt];

limits for both numerator and denominator are the limits of the time interval;

so the denominator becomes just the length of the time interval;

for case I ;

<v> = 34t-32t2]00.01 /0.01;

= 0.3368/0.01 = 33.68 m/s ------------->ANSWER;

similarly you can calulate for other time cases;

next part, instantaneous velocity = dy/dt = 34-32t @ t=1;

v= 34-32 = 2m/s-------------->ANSWER
