As an emergency room nurse, you are caring for a 7 year old child that was admitted for an allergic reaction to peanuts. Upon patient discharge, an EpiPen prescription is given to the parents. What education would you provide to the parents about EpiPen use? What receptors are activated by epinephrine, and briefly explain how it treats the underlying symptoms of anaphalaxis?
Solution
EpiPen is trade name of Epinephrine. Epinephrine is also known as Adrinaline, a fight and Flight hormone. Also act as neuro transmitter. It can increase the muscle contraction, pupil dilation and increasing blood sugar by acting on Alfa and Beta receptors. It is generally used to treat Cardiac arrest and Anaphylaxis. It inhibits the Histamine production and prevents anaphylaxis
