How does a current-limiting fuse operate? Explain with any necessary illustrations or steps.

Solution

Current limiting fuses are used for interruption of minimum fault current in the line in which it is connected.Current limiting fuses simply consists of a few strands of wire capable of withstanding (without melting) normal load currents. But a when a short circuit or over load occurs, high current flows through the wire there by increasing the heat generated ( i2rt) in the fuse over a short duration of time. Strands in the wire melt due to heat generated in the fuse there by disconnecting the equipment from the supply line. Hence current limiting fuse acts as a protective device for short circuit protection of an electrical appartus.
