AUDIO VISUAL PRODUCTION

The Audio Visual Connection allows companies to create computer presentations that include text, sound, voice, graphics and video images - and at relatively low cost.

The concept is simple: a computer-based sales presentation or training program that includes photographs, video, animated diagrams, a musical soundtrack, a spoken narration, text and data drawn from the user\'s data base, all put together with sophisticated techniques borrowed from professional audio-visual productions. Its designers believe it will hold a viewer\'s attention much better than the \'\'slide shows\'\' that are common on computers today.

But multimedia is not yet simple or inexpensive, and those it must be to catch on in corporate offices.

One application that uses Audio Video is an interactive guide to the city of Austin, Tex., The system mixes color photographic and still-frame video images of Austin with a soundtrack, and links it to a data base containing text, sound and images. Using a mouse, the user can select topics of interest - parks, for example, or high-technology companies - and a slick presentation begins.

Such presentations, without the computer involvement, are nothing new. Cities, companies and government agencies routinely make promotional videotapes.

But the relatively low cost of Audio Video may be misleading. To produce his results, which compare favorably with those of a professional audio-visual studio,a powerful computer with high-resolution graphics and a special monitor, a digital video camera, audio and video cassette decks, a slide digitizer, a studio video monitor and other equipment. Another potential hurdle is that Audio Video appears to be complex, restricting its usefulness to companies where at least some employees have a good understanding of both audio-visual production.

Apple Computer, a graphics-based computer that set the standards for ease of use, already has a head start in this field, which goes by the nebulous term multimedia. The Commodore Amiga, from Commodore Business Machines, is also well suited to multimedia production.
