Define populations and samples, give an example of each.

Solution

A population is a whole group of people, or things. An example would be the male population, or the female population. Or you could use the population of Samsung TV\'s, or computers.

A sample is a smaller group, that is basically used to find your data. It could very well be the things mentioned above, but in smaller form. Like, 50 males, 50 females, 20 TV\'s, or 20 computers.

Depending on what you are doing, you may need at least a certain amount sample size, like for a one sample z-test, you must meet the Central Limit Theorm (CLT). Sometimes your population has to be a certain amount bigger than you sample size, like in a proportion t-test, your population must be 10x bigger than your sample size.
