4. A large (15,000-kg) military helicopter lifts a 6000-kg truck straight up out of a danger zone with an acceleration of 4 m/s2. Calculate the tension in the lifting cable.

Solution

Mass of military helicopter M = 15000 kg

Mass of truck m = 6000 kg

Accleration a = 4 m/s 2

Let the tension in the lifting cable be T.

Net force on truck F = T - W

Where W = weight of a truck = mg

               = 6000kg x 9.8m/s 2

               = 58800 N

So, F = T -58800        -------( 1)

But from Newton\'s second law of motion ,F = ma

                                                               = 6000x 4

                                                                = 24000 N ----------( 2)

From equations(1) and( 2) ,

   T - 58800 = 24000

               T = 82800 N
