Two structural members A and B are bolted to a bracket as shown. Knowing that both members are in compression and that the force is 15 kN in member A and 10 kN in member B, determine by trigonometry the magnitude and direction of die resultant of die forces applied to the bracket by members A and B.

Solution

Two forces of 15kN and 10kN are applied , the angle between the two forces is 40 +20 = 60 deg

The resultant of the two forces is :

F = sqrt( 10^2 + 15^2 + 2*10*15cos60)

= sqrt475

= 21.79 kN
