Manuel traveled 26 hours nonstop to Mexico a total of 2 660

Manuel traveled 26 hours nonstop to Mexico, a total of 2, 660 miles. He took a train part of the way, which averaged 110 mph, and then took a bus the remaining distance, which averaged 70 mph. How long was Manuel on the train? Manuel was on the train for hour(s). (Simplify your answer.)

Solution

Let x = time taken for travelling on train

and y = time taken for travelling by bus.

Then x + y = 26

y = 26 - x ... (1)

110x + 70y = 2660 .... (2)

Substitute the value of y from (1) into (2),

110x + 70 (26-x) = 2660

110x + 1820 - 70x = 2660

40x +1820 = 2660

40x = 840

x = 21

So, time taken for travelling on train = 21 hours.
