A tissue culture flask containing cells is cultured in 10mL
A tissue culture flask containing cells is cultured in 10mL of media containing 0.01g/ml glucose. If the cells consume glucose at a rate of 0.01g/hour, how long before the glucose level in the media reaches 0.001g/ml? Why does this model not accurately represent the rate at which nutrients are consumed by cells? Please show your work.
Solution
Answer:
If the cells are in log phase of their growth,
0.01g/ml glucose---------->0.001g/ml
Total of 0.09g of glucose is consumed
It takes 9 hr to consume 0.09g of glucose at a rate 0.01g/hr
This model not accurately represent the rate at which nutrients are consumed by cells since the cells have different phases of growth. The rate of Nutrient consumption depends on the growh phase. Generally the cells have different of the phases of growth-, lag phase (cells adapt to growth conditions), log phase (actively divide), stationary phase (growth rate and death rate are equal) and death phase (cells are dying).
