In the July 2007 issue, Consumer reports examined the calorie content of two kinds of hot dogs: meat and all beef. The researchers purchased samples of several different brands. The meat hot dogs averaged 102.5 calories, compared to 135.4 for the beef hot dogs. A test of the null hypothesis that there\'s no difference in mean calorie content yields a p-value of 0 02. Would a 99% confidence interval for mu_meat - mu_beef include 0? Why or why not?

Solution

p-value of 0.02 is not less than 0.01, thus we fail to reject 2 tailed test at 1% level, it is plausible that difference is zero at 1% level, => 99% CI includes zero.
