Make a 10-fold, 5-fold and 2-fold dilution given a starting concentration of 6mg/ml and you need to make a solution of 3ml volume.

(im very confused on what this means, if you can please try to explain what this is asking) I was not given a solution

Solution

10-fold dilution: Stock concentration is, 6 mg/ml. Taking 0.6 ml (6/10) from the stock and transferring it to 6 ml diluent (0.6 ml stock + 5.4 ml diluent) is a 10 fold dilution. As we need the final volume of 3 ml, transfer 0.3 ml into a test tube and make up the volume up to 3 ml (0.3 ml stock + 2.7 ml diluent).

5-fold dilution: Take 1.2 ml from the stock (6/5) and transfer it to another test tube, and make up the volume up to 6 ml with the diluent. Or transfer 0.6 ml into 3 ml diluent, which gives 5 fold dilution.

2-fold dilution: Take 3 ml from the stock (6/2) and transfer it to another test tube, and make up the volume up to 3 ml with the diluent. Or transfer 1.5 ml into 3 ml diluent, which gives 2 fold dilution.
