Under what condition might you prefer to use the
median rather than the mean as the best measure of
central tendency? Explain why.

Solution

The mean is greatly influenced by outliers, or extreme values, but the median is only concerned of middle values in order.

In that case, we prefer to use the median.

Ex.

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, 100000.

The median here is 5, but the mean becomes very large because of the large number, which is most probably obtained by mistake. Hence, median is better to use in this case.
