On January 29th, 2014, the Royal Caribbean cruise ship \"Explorer of the Sea\" returned to Bayonne, New Jersey with nearly 700 passengers violently sick with what the Center for Disease Control determined to be an outbreak of norovirus. This virus is responsible for 400,000 emergency room visits and contributes to about 56,000-71,000 hospitalizations each year. It is also responsible for 570 to 800 deaths, mostly among young children and the elderly. Should more aggressive sanitation practices be implemented above washing your hands after using the bathroom? Why or why not? Have you ever witnessed a restaurant employee failing to wash his or her hands after using the restroom? How does that make you feel? Explain.

Solution

Noro virus is a very contagious virus. It is also known as winter vomiting bug in UK, also known as stomach flu causing vomition, diarrhoea, stomach cramp. 48percent of food borne outbreak is due to the Noro virus. 18 viral particles on hand can make sick. The amount of viruses that fit on the head of a pin would be enough to infect more than one thousand people. Mainly contaminated food and drinks is highly responsible for outbreak of the disease. Also by touching contaminated surface disease occurs and spread through contaminated food and water. It causes severe acute gastroenteritis, stomach pain, nausea, headache and watery diarrhoea. Young and old people are highly susceptible for the disease. So much more aggressive sanitation measures should be taken to avoid contamination. Restaurants with unhygienic conditions are highly responsible for spread of the disease. So preventive steps may be taken as follows. 1...Wash hand properly 2...Rinse fruits and vegetables before use. 3...clean surfaces and wash laundry. 4...A sick person should not be allowed for cooking and serving. Particularly these protocols are strictly to be followed in the restaurant.
