Hematology Help----
When is a bone marrow study NOT indicated?
When circulating blasts are seen on the peripheral smear
For evaluation of pancytopenia
In diagnosed iron deficiency anemia
In thrombocytopenia with no apparent cause (idiopathic)
Solution
When circulating blasts are seen on the peripheral smear.
Bone marrow examination is used in the diagnosis of a number of conditions, including leukemia, multiple myeloma, lymphoma, anemia, and pancytopenia. Thrombocytopenia or bleeding disorders are not contraindications as long as the procedure is performed by a skilled clinician.
