A 24 W load at 12 V DC is connected to the source by a #12 wire. The source is located 100 feet from the load. Assume this wire gauge has a resistance of 1.6 ohm per thousand ft. The current is 2 mA 2A 1.6A 1A 20 A The power loss in the wire (in W) is 1.28 1.26 1.58 1.36 1.18
Solution
Given Power consumed by Load is 24 W at Vdc = 12 V.
We know Power P = V*I W;
where V is voltage across load and I is current through the load.
1 ) I = P/V = 24/12 = 2 A;
option : - B
2 ) The power loss in the wire is Ploss = I2 * R *2
where 2 is multiplied to consider to and fro path i.e wire connected to load and back to source.
where R is resistance of wire, given resistance per 1000 feet is 1.6 ohm, so for 100 feet resistance is equal to
R = (1.6/1000) * 100 = 0.16 ohm.
RT = 2*R = 0.32 ohm
Ploss = I2 * RT (or)
Ploss = I2 * R = 22 * 0.16*2 = 1.28 W;
option : - A
