Do the cerebellar hemispheres receive proprioceptive nerve impulses ipsilaterally or contralaterally?
Is Proprioception consciously perceived by the cerebellum?
Solution
The cerebellar hemispheres receive proprioceptive nerve impulses ipsilaterally.Impulses from the other lobes of the cerebrum descend as parieto-temporo-occipitopontine fibers through the posterior limb of the internal capsule and the lateral part of the cerebral crus. Both groups of fibers terminate ipsilaterally in the pontine nuclei. Also, the Purkinje neurons of the lateral part of the hemisphere project ipsilaterally to the dentate nucleus.
Proprioception is the ability to detect the position of the body in space. This may be consciously perceived, such as with joint position sense, or it may be a sensation that is not perceived consciously, such as from muscles and ligaments.Studies testing experimental phantom limbs by blocking peripheral nerves revealed conscious sensations of limb movement in the absence of any sensory input when subjects attempted to move (e.g., Gandevia et al., 2006). This result clearly supports a conversion of the efference copy from motor to sensory coordinates making proprioceptive prediction possible.
