Imagine that you were born into the top 1%... How do you think your life might change if you were born into a different social class rung? How might your new social class standing affect you? (If you were born into a very wealthy and powerful family, imagine that you were born into a very poor one and answer the same question.)
What effects has social class had on your life?
What are the intergenerational patterns of mobility in your family?
Solution
Thanks for the question.
While being born with certain privileges is a convenient thing, being born into a different class would mean loss of these privileges.
But the truth is that every class has its own privileges. A rich man is expected to pay out to a lot of people while a poor man is expected to get paid by a lot of people. A rich man has to pay a high amount for everything including his house, car, home, food, clothes etc, a poor man gets all these things at a fraction of the price. Now the question is are there any long term benefits of living a high expenditure, hig maintainanace lifestyle or does it have many drawbacks as compared to a low low maintainaance lifestyle. It s hard to answer this question. Ultimately both of them have to die. They go the the same graveyard and occupy the same area in similar coffins. So the eternal after life is the same for both. Does the rich man have any benefits in his after life as compared to the poor man?
Being born into a rich or poor familiy also means a lot of responsibility. If you dont fulfill your responsibilities as per your standing, or if you do it satisfactorily. its quite possible that your position of social class mau fluctuate rapidly. There are many stories of poor people becoming rich and rich people becoming poor. Its all a dynamic process which is not really constant all the time. As per your effective and satisfactory functioning in the social system, your position can rapidly change up or down within the system.
Social class has also an good or bad effect on its people. A high social class imparts its own problmes on its people and so does a low social class. The effects can range from lifestyle problems, medical illnessess, mental tensions, threats from different levels and aspects of social class, Trading of benefits with cons with promises of shifts in social class, attacks from different levels of society etc. all these things are common and effect everybody everywhere all the time.
The intergenerational patterns of mobility in any family are dynamic. As everyone moves towards their death, They adjust their position for a beneficial afterlife.
