If a species has a low capacity for glucuronidation reaction
If a species has a low capacity for glucuronidation reactions, how might metabolism of drugs and toxicants be affected?
Solution
Glucuronidation is a process by which the body hormone secrets a substance glucuronides that makes the drugs more water soluble so that any toxin that is generated from the drugs are removed from the body through urine or stool.
Glucuronidation is involved in xenobiotic metabolism which is the breakdown of drugs through special enzymes secreted from the body. The reaction consisted of the transfer of glucuronic acid components to any of the substrates through the process of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase.UDP-glucuronic acid is produced in the liver which helps the xenobiotic molecules to get attached to hydrophilic molecules which enhance their metabolism and allows the drugs to become more water soluble it also helps some toxicants to become less toxic.
Low capacity of glucuronidation can reduce xenobiotic metabolism.
